January 24, 2025-Alumni Series Paired Dinner
$110.00
Welcome to the Alumni Series
Join us each month from September to February for an unforgettable dining experience merging tradition with innovation. Our Alumni Series will feature expertly crafted 4-course menus by our rotating special guest Alumni Chef and culinary students, paired with exquisite wines for $110 per person (all-inclusive).
Featuring Shariff Rajpar (Culinary Arts '17), his real interest in culinary started after taking foods as an elective in junior high. He remembers his grade 8 foods teacher calling his parents to let them know how well he was doing in the class – that really kicked off his interest in exploring culinary as a career.
While attending NAIT, Shariff applied what he was learning in class as a line cook at Earls. From there, he had the pleasure to stage at Dirt Candy, one of only two vegetarian restaurants in New York City with a Michelin Star, owned by Amanda Cohen. *Fun fact: As a student, Shariff stirred grits for 4 hours for Chef Amanda’s lunch, which is actually how his journey to New York City to stage at Dirt Candy began!*
After returning from New York, Shariff started working at DOSC, where he progressed from line cook to sous chef, and then eventually became the head chef for a couple of years. Today, Shariff works as a line cook at Fu’s Repair Shop and teaches in NAIT’s culinary program.
Shariff is grateful to be an instructor as he not only gets to share his passion with his students, but he also gets to continue learning alongside them and expanding his knowledge. Exchanging knowledge with fellow instructors and students is something that he truly enjoys – and he also appreciates the access to world-class kitchens and equipment! As a student, Shariff enjoyed making genuine connections with his peers – and he enjoys building those same genuine connections as an instructor.
When reflecting on his career to this point, Shariff has a few highlights that come to mind. In addition to staging at Dirt Candy, another career highlight for him is his “Saree not sorry” pop up that he had at Fu’s Repair Shop. He got to cook the food he identifies the most with, and stay true to his roots, while meeting great people along the way and being part of Edmonton’s rapidly growing food scene.
